Hydropass - a complete smart irrigation system
Climate changes with rising temperatures, global water challenges and rapid population growth require much more efficient use of water resources and increased agricultural productivity. Smart irrigation helps improve irrigation management and save energy and water for the benefit of the climate and all stakeholders.
AC.MO is a member of the AVK group and is one of the most important companies in Italy for the supply of intelligent solutions for irrigation and water supply equipment. After numerous years of research and development, considerable investments and over 70,000 installations in the last 6 years, AC.MO has developed the Hydropass, a specific system for the management and control of irrigation water distribution. An ever-growing number of Consortia in Italy are using this system, achieving brilliant results in terms of water and energy savings.
Monitor, plan and optimise irrigation
After over 20 years of research and development, AC.MO has developed automated measurement instrumentation to save water resources and to bring benefits to the management of large irrigation networks.
Hydropass consists of a monobloc body with integrated flow metre, automatic control valve and flow limiter. The system does not require external power as it is completely battery powered with a lifespan of 10 years.
The Smart Irrigation System can be connected to national databases with weather and soil data that help predict the most efficient irrigation schedule. This predictive programming leads to an immediate improvement in irrigation operations, saving water, energy, time and costs.
Configurations
The Hydropass system is composed of:
- Hydraulic valve with nylon reinforced diaphragm, tested for 5,000 cycles and tested to ensure smooth and gradual operation to avoid dangerous overpressures
- Flow metre with IP68 protection
- High performance flow restrictor with self-modulating rubber washer, low pressure loss and free passage. It is integrated into the ductile iron body and enclosed by the robust stainless steel casing.
- Standard options are straight threaded, curved threaded and flanged. Optionally, other connections to satisfy any request from the field.
Hydropass is available as a “Stand-Alone” configuration or with a communication module for real-time data collection.
Management and communication
The system is managed by the Hydrokey (a battery-powered electronic card) or by the Hydropass app, and the data is collected by dedicated management software with a simple and intuitive graphic interface.
The communication configuration and the LoRa radio module enable the creation of an advanced measurement system for real-time data collection over long distances and without traffic costs.
Benefits for users and utilities
In addition to all product features, the Hydropass smart irrigation system focuses on the development of the three pillars of sustainability: environmental protection, economic savings and social development. This is supported by achieving ISO 14017:2022 certification and the installation of the Hydropass system benefits all stakeholders.
Benefits for end users:
- irrigation control
- optimization of agricultural yield
- Watering tips
Advantages for consortia:
- water saving
- savings on management and maintenance costs
- energy saving
- continuous control of water resources

The Italian irrigation system
Irrigation is the artificial process by which water is distributed over agricultural land in a controlled manner at regular intervals. It’s used to support crop growth, maintain landscapes, provide frost protection, and increase soil moisture in arid areas that don’t receive enough water from rainfall or other natural sources. Irrigation systems are also used for livestock cooling and dust suppression, as well as for drainage.
In Italy the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) is the plan approved in 2021 by Italy to relaunch its economy after the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to allow the green and digital development of the country. The document describes possible investments in the resilience of the irrigation agrosystem for a better management of water resources. The objective is to increase the efficiency of the irrigation systems through the development of a innovative and digitalized infrastructure, to obtain a more sustainable agricultural sector, better adapted to climate change. The investment aims to convert irrigation systems into more efficient systems, adapt distribution networks to reduce losses and install remote control equipment.
The Hydropass system
The field unit integrates all the hydraulic, measurement, components of interception, the managing and controlling electronics, in a single steel casing. The group is autonomous, does not require external power and it’s provided of the necessary communication interfaces.
